Next up in our IBA17 winners’ interviews is Amy and Athina from Topology who scooped the Best Interior Designer Blog Award on the night. Inspired by the winners that came before them, Topology were determined to take home an award this year and all of their hard work paid off. The IBA Blog catches up with Amy and Athina after their win…
What inspired you to start your blog?
Over the last few years, we’ve been so inspired by all the other interior bloggers like 2LG, Swoon Worthy, Sarah Akwisombe etc., following their journeys and stories to tell about the interiors industry. It seemed only natural for us to follow in their footsteps. For us, blogging seemed like a great platform to let our voice be heard so that we could reach other likeminded individuals who may share the same thoughts and passion as us on affordable interior design.
Do you have any advice for new bloggers?
Our advice for new bloggers would be to stay true to your brand – write about what you like and what you find interesting, and your enthusiasm will show through your writing. Find a style that you like and feel comfortable with and be consistent with it. Also take your own (good quality) photos – it’ll give your blog much more personality!
Where do you think your blog will take you now?
It would be nice if it could take us around the world to document interior trends globally but for now we hope our blog continues to entertain our readers about all the goings on in the interior industry in the UK.
Does your blog help enhance your interior design business? How does it operate alongside your main website?
Our blog is a brilliant way to connect with potential clients. By writing blogs about interior trends and great affordable homeware brands we’re showing our readers that we’re always keeping up to date with what’s going on in the interiors industry. Also, our blog style is quite informal so we get to communicate our company personality through writing it – we often share our opinions, so readers are more likely to respond and share our content, which of course gets the Topology name out there!
What is the biggest lesson you have learned so far through blogging?
How important it is to be open minded when it comes to blog topics and features. For example, say we were particularly fond of solely Scandinavian, clean simple interior design – we’ve learnt we can’t solely write about this just because we personally like it. Blogging has taught us to be incredibly open minded to all forms of design. It’s allowed us to research, discuss and more importantly appreciate a variation of styles and trends etc. that wouldn’t necessarily be our preference but that we know other people will enjoy learning and reading about and hopefully incorporate into their own homes.
