What inspired you to start your blog?

A friend encouraged me to start blogging about the work I was doing on our house. At first, I was very shy about the idea because I’m generally a very private person and I didn’t find it easy to put myself out there. I started writing some blog posts and found I really enjoyed it, but it took me over a year to pluck up the courage to actually publish the website. A couple of days later, one of my posts was shared by two different American bloggers and it took off from there.

How did you feel when you won the IBA18 Best DIY & Home Improvement Blog Award?

It feels like a great achievement to be recognised for what I do by judges whom I really respect. I enjoy blogging so much that sometimes I wonder if it’s a bit self-indulgent, but to be validated by industry experts in this way makes me feel like I do have something worthwhile to offer.

Where do you hope your blog will take you in the future?

Since winning at the IBA18, I have been asked to write a regular interiors feature for an online publication. I really enjoy it, and I would love to get more of that kind of work. I would also like to build up my social media following. However, the blog will always be my first love.

What was your favourite DIY project last year and why?

Probably the bedroom I did for my friend. She lives in a rental home and has a very tight budget, so I was thrilled to be able to use my DIY skills to create a nice, relaxing space for her and her husband.

Do you have any advice for new bloggers?

Be true to yourself and true to your readers. Write about what you know and find your own niche. It’ll take time, but don’t change who you are in order to become more popular. People appreciate honesty and authenticity.
