Ashley, founder of The Gold Hive, took home the US Best Newcomer Blog Award at the 2018 IBAs. With a passion for sharing DIY projects and stories of renovating a 1915 bungalow in San Diego, The Gold Hive is a rising new talent in the blogging world. Ashley talks to the IBA Blog about how she felt when she won the award and where she hopes her blog will take her in the future…
What inspired you to start your blog?
I’ve worked in the education department of fine art museums for the past ten years, so I have a love for teaching and sharing as well as a passion for art and design. When my husband and I bought our first house, I found myself turning to blogs for inspiration and helpful tips for renovating our home. When friends and family started turning to me for advice, I decided to start a blog to share my experiences with other folks looking to learn more about renovation, old houses, and design.
How did you feel when you won the IBA18 Best Newcomer Blog Award?
I was thrilled! It’s exciting to be recognized for my hard work in a sea of many other talented bloggers!
Where do you find inspiration for your blog content?
My house dictates the blog content so when I renovate a room, or something goes wrong with the plumbing, I share it on the blog in real time. I find inspiration for design from other bloggers, travel, books, movie sets, and professional interior designers.
Do you have any advice for new bloggers?
Be authentic. It’s so easy to imitate other bloggers thinking that you can find success by following the style, format, voice, or design of another blogger. While being inspired by them can be helpful, it’s likely you’ll lose yourself if you get caught up in doing what you think you need to do rather than doing what you want to do. Also, learn to capture and edit quality photographs, take a writing class, and educate yourself on web design and techy skills.
Where do you hope your blog will take you in the future?
I don’t know where it will go because the world of blogging is constantly shifting. I hope to continue making connections with people around the world because that’s been such a rewarding part of putting myself out on the internet. I also find immense satisfaction in using my platform for good and want to continue being a voice for fostering animals, reducing waste, and supporting important causes. While my blog focuses on home design, I want to continue helping people with more than just throw pillows and paint colors.
