Take a Peek Behind the Scenes at the #IBA18 Judging Day

Let’s talk judging day! This year’s judging day took place on Wednesday 5th September at our preferred partner’s offices, WeWork, just around the corner from Liverpool Street Station. As we have mentioned before, this year’s judging and voting stage is working a little differently to previous years so the 2018 judging day was held during the voting stage for the first time in IBA history!

To make judging and voting as fair as possible we selected judges for each category this year, it was then their job to look into every nominated blog in that category and mark them against the judging criteria. The judges’ picks have been given a score and once voting closes the blogs with the most votes in each category will also be given a score, both scores will then be added together to create the shortlist (the five highest scoring blogs in each category and each territory) and decide the winner of each category.

As we needed lots of different rooms for our groups of judges, WeWork was the perfect option because we could hire a selection of their meeting rooms. We split the judges into two groups, the first being the Best Craft, Best Design Inspiration, Best Interior Designer, Best Lifestyle and Best Newcomer. When the judges arrived there was just enough time for a quick catch up and a breakfast of fruit and pastries before the judges got stuck into their morning.

The judges were all prepared with their notes on the blogs in their categories so it was just a case of going through each blog and checking their thoughts matched before giving the blogs their scores. After a whirlwind of a morning, we had the first categories all scored and it was time to say goodbye to our first lot of judges. Our next group of judges were greeted with tasty afternoon treats in the form of cakes and scones and it wasn’t long before they were ready to get judging too.

The next categories were the Best Company, Best DIY & Home Improvement, Best Use of Photography and Best Craft Blog awards. These judges had just as much fun as the morning judges delving into the blogs in their categories and before we knew it, they had all been scored too. It’s not long now until voting closes so make sure you get you final votes for your favourite blogs in soon on our voting page. Once we have the final voting numbers through we can give all our blogs an overall score and the shortlists will be revealed on Wednesday 26th September.
