The 2017 Best Newcomer Blog Award went to new blog on the block Girl About House. Created by interior designer Sarah Mailer as an extension of her business, Girl About House showcases interiors, fashion and design news and events which the judges were swept away by. The IBA Blog catches up with Sarah after her win…
What inspired you to start your blog?
I have always loved writing and beautiful imagery – I originally studied History of Art at University. A blog had been on the agenda for a while as I longed for a forum to bring my passions together. I had a strong vision for Girl About House from the outset – I wanted it to look and feel glossy, edited and sophisticated (I do love a bit of glam)! As an interior designer by day, I’m always talking form and function whilst playing around with colour, texture and pattern so I was keen to explore these elements alongside new trends in the content.
Do you have any advice for new bloggers?
As I only began in June (and therefore am a total novice myself) I’m still on a huge learning curve. However, what I would say to anyone considering starting a blog is to go for it! Whilst I found my first post incredibly daunting and I still have insecurities every time I upload a new piece or speak to the camera on Instagram, it’s a wonderful community and such an exciting and worthwhile endeavour. Just stay true to yourself – your vision – work hard, and the rest will follow.
Where do you think your blog will take you now?
I honestly have no idea and that’s what I love about it! I’ve met some really lovely, genuine people and I’m so excited about what the future may hold. For now, I’m going to keep on doing what I’m doing and enjoy the experience!
Have you found that starting your blog has helped grow your interior design business? Do they enhance each other?
As much as it wasn’t necessarily designed to drive business to Sarah Mailer Design – it was launched because I just love writing, taking images, editing, talking interiors – it has definitely raised the profile of my company. During more recent project enquiries there has been a lot of reference made to the blog and clients often share that it’s why they would like to work with me. I think that Girl About House also allows people to see the ‘human’ behind the my interior design business, which appeals. Ultimately, blogging has offered up a way to share ‘the real me’ without compromising on the professionalism of Sarah Mailer Design. They certainly do enhance each other and I often refer to blog articles when talking through processes such as picking paint colours or styling.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned from blogging?
I feel that I am still learning so much and that I haven’t necessarily reached the point where I can analyse my journey fully retrospectively. I suppose the key thing that has really struck me is that it’s MUCH harder than it appears. I often think that friends see blogging as a bit of a ‘jolly’ – all lovely events and freebies. In reality, it actually it requires incredible patience, determination and commitment. Things don’t necessarily happen by themselves.
