Best Design Inspiration Blog Award Winner Alice In Scandiland Talks to the IBA Blog

Alice In Scandiland took home the coveted Best Design Inspiration Blog award at the 2017 IBAs as the judge’s loved her inspiring dedication to all things Scandi. Here the IBA Blog checks in with the mind behind the blog, Alice herself, to see how it was to win and what the biggest lesson she’s learned since joining the interior blogging world has been…

What inspired you to start your blog?

I had been sharing photos of my projects within our home on the Facebook page Housfolk and other members asked if I had a blog. I hadn’t considered it before that point but thought it was worth a try. It just took off from there really, generally I find the writing part quite easy and people seem to like what I have to say and what I do.

Do you have any advice for new bloggers?

I’m not great with technology so went for a free WordPress account initially, so I could just get stuck into the writing and sharing. I find if you try to be someone else and aren’t honest and write from the heart then readers are less interested, they need to feel a connection to you, to what you do, to keep them coming back for more. If you love your blog material then that passion will come through in your images and writing.

Where do you think your blog will take you now?

I’m not sure, I’m happy at the moment letting things develop naturally. I enjoy working with brands who I feel a connection with, but am quite selective as I want to be honest with my readers and stay true to the foundations of my blog, good design, affordable ideas, less is more and how all this works (or sometimes doesn’t work) with a family.

What is your biggest source of design inspiration for your blog?

My brain is going over ideas constantly, tick, tick, night and day and with Instagram and Pinterest at the click of a button no wonder I am forever changing and tweaking things around the house. My husband says I have a problem, I know he’s probably right, he’s surprised I haven’t upgraded him yet!

I follow so many inspirational people on Insta and really look forward to seeing how their homes evolve, I can’t help but be spurred on by this wonderful creative community.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned so far through blogging?

I think I am learning to just be myself and be true to my own style. I’m quite honest about how I am finding my feet and how at least half the time I am just totally winging it, I think this is appreciated by my readers. If something doesn’t inspire me it’s obvious in my writing and so I am very conscious of who I choose to work with, as I don’t want to dilute myself and compromise that honesty and trust I have built up.
