Meet Kimberly Duran, founder of the 2016 Bloggers’ Choice Award Winner Swoon Worthy

Kimberly Duran took home the top prize, the Bloggers’ Choice Award, for her blog Swoon Worthy at the 2016 awards. A outstandingly glamorous blog with a firm focus on large DIY projects, Swoon Worthy is one of the best blogs in the industry and last year all of the shortlisted bloggers named it as such. We checked in with Kimberly after her big win to see what’s in store for Swoon Worthy in 2017 and what her favourite DIY project has been…

How did it feel when Swoon Worthy was awarded the Bloggers’ Choice Award?

Utterly amazing. I was absolutely blown away by the show of support from my fellow bloggers. I have always said the best thing about blogging is the community and the friendships I’ve made with fellow bloggers. I was genuinely in a state of shock for a good few days and I have to admit, I actually got a bit teary thinking about it again on the train home from London – I’m not sure if it was from lack of sleep and being a tad hungover but I was overwhelmed with gratefulness. I am sure my fellow commuters thought I was losing it!

You have so many fabulous DIY posts on your blog, what was your favourite DIY transformation to document?

There have been so many so it’s like choosing from my children! Haha! I think my two favourites were our bathroom remodel and our dining room remodel. Both involved taking the rooms back to their bare bones and completely starting from scratch, from floors to ceilings to walls and everything in between. When you create a space that’s completely unique and has your own real stamp on it, there’s something very satisfying about the whole process – from conception to completion and both of those spaces really feel very personal to me. Plus, they’ve made such a difference in terms of how we use our home. We also just finished off the kitchen remodel and I’m so happy with that

What are the greatest sources of inspiration for your blog and all of your posts?

I suppose in a lot of ways, the house itself is my inspiration. I live and work in my home so I’m constantly thinking about ways to improve it or evolve it for how we are currently using it and living in it. Of course, like everyone else, I adore Pinterest for ideas as well as other blogs – there is just so much talent out there! I also love travel and escape as a means of kickstarting my creativity. I think taking a break and really just enjoying your surroundings is such a necessity when we live in such a fast-paced world and we depend so much on technology. Stripping it back and allowing ourselves to live in the moment is always a great way for me to feel re-energised and inspired again.

What do you think will be the big interior trends of 2017?

I adore the fact that gold and brass are now on trend. I’ve been using it in my interiors for around 5 or 6 years (everyone thought I was crazy back then) so having so much to choose from now is fantastic. I also love the trend for houseplants. They add so much life to a space. I also see the Bohemian trend really taking off – all those rich textural fabrics are fabulous and I think people want to feel more connected to other cultures now in light of what’s happening in the world. There’s also such a pull for handcrafted objects and organic design and I feel it’s really going back to wanting to feel more grounded when we are surrounded by technology all the time.

What do you have planned for Swoon Worthy over the next year?

I recently completed a full redesign of my blog and a total rebrand which I think really showcases Swoon Worthy as an evolving space. For this year, one of my goals is to create more video content to run alongside the blog. It’s a bit of a learning curve but I’m determined to crack it in 2017! I’ve also decided to share even more design advice as a regular feature and focus on ensuring my readers are constantly learning and evolving their own decorating style.
